Nikon should aim to be the best by being better than the rest, not by eliminating them.
But Nikon isn't forcing anyone to do anything and are looking after their customers.
It is far more likely that Nikon is not bothered by cheap e-bay batteries at all and they're not even a consideration when writing the new firmware.And you assume the third party batters have the exact same testing and quality control despite being manufactured by someone other than Nikon and costing less money which is of course highly unlikely.You are also ignoring the warranty coverage you get when you buy a Nikon battery.The wrong strategy is to try to force them to buy by disabling all competition.Customers taken for patsies don't remain loyal.
The difference in battery life alone equalizes the costs. Dangles some minor fix carrot to ensure users 'update' to 'take advantage' of features *1 and *2. Fixes bug that allowed users to downgrade firmware to earlier versions. Complain about how expensive the Nikon batteries are...
